Talawakelle Tea Estates wins Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Award 2023
Talawakelle Tea Estates - ‘Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Award 2023’ at the 20thBest Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
Aitken Spence and Nestlé Lanka were adjudged the first and second runners up respectively.
The annual BCCS Awards is the premier corporate citizenship award, and highlights sustainability champions in the national corporate arena. The Awards promote corporate citizen sustainability ownership and initiatives that deliver social and environmental benefits while pursuing profits.
Talawakelle Tea Estates also walked away with the Category B ‘Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Award 2023’, awarded to companies with an annual turnover below Rs. 15 billion, while Elpitiya Plantations and Kelani Valley Plantations were awarded as the respective first and second runners-up in this category.
The ceremony also recognised top 10 Corporate Citizens. This Award recognises the top 10 corporates which have implemented outstanding sustainability initiatives under both ‘Category A and B’. Aitken Spence, CBL Investments Limited (CBL Group), Commercial Bank of Ceylon, Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company, Elpitiya Plantations, Hatton National Bank, Kelani Valley Plantations, Nestlé Lanka, Sampath Bank and Talawakelle Tea Estates were adjudged the Top 10 Corporate Citizens of 2022.

Having gone beyond carbon neutral status in 2017, Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC (BTEL) achieved Climate Positive certification making it the worlds’ first and only tea growing, manufacturing and marketing company to offer Gold Certified uncompensated Climate Positive Teas.
As part of the company’s mission to be environmentally sustainable, they follow key initiatives including R&D projects that help utilise natural fertilisers and the promotion of efficient water management. Additionally, the company has switched to non-conventional renewable energy such as solar and hydro power, and actively practice agroforestry.

Andaradeniya Estate wins Industrial Excellence Gold Award
Andaradeniya Estate Ltd., renowned locally and internationally for its long standing and highly respected involvement in the tea industry, won the Gold Award in the value-added tea and associated products category at the Industrial Excellence Awards organised by the Industrial Development Board (IDB).
Andaradeniya Estate Ltd., Chairman Dr. W. Jinadasa, received the award at a gala ceremony held at Waters’ Edge under the patronage of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Established in 1983 as a tea leaf collection company, the Andaradeniya Estate Ltd., has now grown into a large network of companies that make a significant contribution to the local economy with 11 tea factories in several districts, mini hydro power plants and solar power systems. The business network consists of a group of companies including Andaradeniya Estate Ltd., Sinharaja Hills Plantation Ltd., Nivithigala Factories Ltd., Andaradeniya Holdings Ltd., Hills Plantation Ltd., Andaradeniya Tea Estate Ceylon Ltd., Andaradeniya Mini Hydro Power Ltd.
The Andaradeniya Group, which contributes 2.5% to Sri Lanka›s national tea production and produces 8.5 million kilograms of tea annually, provides about 4,000 direct jobs and about 25,000 indirect jobs and engages with nearly 25,000 tea smallholders. The company has also established a group of rural transport agents and young entrepreneurs. For his business, social and religious activities, since 1983, Dr. Jinadasa has won many awards locally and internationally.
“We give priority to the production of high-quality tea which will upgrade the tea industry, which is a valuable foreign exchange earning resource for the country. I would like to express my gratitude to the fellow board of directors, staff, transport agents and tea smallholders who have contributed to this achievement,” said Dr. Jinadasa.
